Inclusion in Sport
I am firmly against any blanket policy that excludes trans athletes from women’s sport. This attitude is small-minded, and it is regressive.

Yes, this is my first gravel race. LOL.

Oh BOY, curly bars AND flat bars this year. First time I've ever raced as a dual-discipline athlete. Photo by Bill Schieken @cxhairs
New Season, New Team, New Everything
New Season, New Team, New Everything
I'm less interested in the bytes of information available in instagram posts, and more interested in engaging, thought-provoking newsletters, etc. So, I figured I'd bring back this blog.
Anticipation
Anticipation
That’s where I’m living right now - in the small village of I Can’t Wait (a suburb of the greater metropolis of Positivity), where the residents have a strong appreciation for delayed gratification and the power of anticipation.
Training Through Uncertainty
Training Through Uncertainty
Uncertainty is very uncomfortable. It breeds anxiety, and it can kill motivation. And we are currently living through one of the most uncertain situations that many of us have ever experienced. So, how do you continue training through this?
Commonwealth Games
Commonwealth Games
Let me start by saying that Commonwealth Games was a really inspiring experience. I gained so much from being there and am really grateful to everyone involved for the opportunity. A medal was something I dreamed about, but it was a tall ask and not something I expected. Coming away from the Games with that moment is an incredible feeling.
live it, breathe it, believe it
live it, breathe it, believe it
This past weekend, I began my 2018 race season in Banyoles, Spain. You can never know what to expect in the first race of the year - there are just so many unknowns after 6 months off racing......
Optimizing Recovery
Optimizing Recovery
I am often asked about how to manage rest days. This is a common theme among those who deal with food disorders, exercise disorders and other mental health issues. Even for athletes who don’t have a clinical disorder, resting can be incredibly tough.
Bike Set Up - A Female Perspective
Bike Set Up - A Female Perspective
Despite what you might guess, my bike set up is not significantly different from the guys'. In fact, I'd say that my set up is a function of weight, height, and riding style (all which don't really have anything to do with gender).
Review: Maui Road Riding
Review: Maui Road Riding
For the cycling People of the North (i.e. Canadians), finding a reliable and enjoyable winter riding destination is a must. As a professional who's been skipping out on winter for the last 5-6 years, I've tried out my fair share of locations. SoCal, NorCal, South Carolina, Victoria (BC), Tucson, and most recently, Maui. For those whose interest is piqued by that last destination, here is a review of the road riding available on the island: the routes, what you'll need to know and bring, logistic positives and negatives, and suggestions for making a riding vacation/training camp work.
HOW TO LOVE FALL RIDING
HOW TO LOVE FALL RIDING
Fall is my favourite time to ride. Crisp air, hero dirt, gorgeous colours, and the freedom to ride for endless hours without the thought of racing… what more could you want? Apparently, though, some people aren’t as into fall riding as me.
Racer’s Amnesia
Racer’s Amnesia
With the scrunched up nose, squinted eyes, and universally recognized “icky” mouth formation, it looks like I might be about to puke (or at least spit out whatever Lespy is trying to feed me). Alas, my friends, this is simply what we call a Suffer Face.
Giving 100%
Giving 100%
A few years ago, I went through a season where I gave up whenever things got hard. When faced with a challenge in life or on the bike, I recoiled while the thoughts of “I can’t do this” or “this is too hard” took over my brain. There are a lot of reasons why this was happening – low self-esteem and confidence, results-based focus, and joyless participation are some of the main factors.
World Cup Aftermath
You’ve all seen the “before” photos from a World Cup – the nicely laid out kit, bottles, gels, and number plate that give you an idea of what goes in a World Cup racer’s race day bag. You’ve also all read the “race recaps” – the posts that go into great detail about how a race went down. So, I decided to give you something a little bit different to read: a story of World Cup Aftermath.
Making the Transition
Making the Transition
Making the jump from Junior to U23, or U23 to Elite is tough. In each case, the fields are bigger, faster, and more unrelenting.
The Big Unveiling: "Take a Moment" With Haley
The Big Unveiling: "Take a Moment" With Haley
Over the past few months, I have been working on creating a colouring book. Borne out of my mindfulness practice, this book combines some of my favourite (and simplest) activities for de-stressing and relaxation.
PB and Maple Ride Bars
PB and Maple Ride Bars
Maybe I’m picky, but store-bought bars do not sit well with me. No matter how natural their ingredients, I always feel icky after 4 hours worth of bars on the bike.
